Chavurah

Chavurah

The Chavurah Program at the JCCWH, which is now in its thirteenth year, was created in order to encourage Community and Education.  We have varied programs that reach out to both our members as well as the unaffiliated in order to enhance a community spirit that would bond us to both our fellow congregants and neighbors through participation in chavurah groups geared to their particular interests.  If we want to make our lives more meaningful and inject more passion into our Jewishness, if we want to identify more with our Jewish roots and forge closer bonds with friends and others, Chavurah is one way of doing this.

The following is a list of our current Chavurah groups that meet monthly:

.  Current Issues Chavurah where fellow members have an opportunity to express their views on a variety of hot topics broiling the world.

Shabbat Study Chavurah  where we study Jewish texts together after services led by Rabbi Vernon.

Bible Study Chavurah – where members meet in each other’s homes to study selected books from the Bible.

Advanced Beginners Ulpan – the study of Modern day Hebrew for those with a slight knowledge of the language.  These classes are let by a professional Hebrew teacher.

Intermediate Ulpan – the study of modern day Hebrew for those with more advanced knowledge of the language.  These classes are led by a professional Hebrew teacher.

Matinee and Evening Film Chavurot – Feature length and documentary films of Jewish interest are shown twice a month during most of the year. One film is shown in the Evening, a different film is screened as a Matinee. Films are introduced by Rabbi Vernon who also leads a discussion following each film. During the winter months, only the Matinee Film Chavurah meets. Feature films are usually Israeli or European productions with English subtitles, documentaries most often are in English. There is a nominal donation requested to support the purchase of additional films. During the summer, an Israeli film festival is held during which six films are screened over three days. Check your mail for the flyer for the next film!

Exploring Jewish Worship Chavurah - led by Rabbi Vernon, meets monthly usually on a Thursday afternoon.  Each month we learn about a Jewish holiday and its customs and observance or about some aspect of the Shabbat prayer service.  Most often, we study the special prayers or synagogue observance associated with the holiday or occasion.  At each meeting we set the date for the next one, so check the calendar for the next session.  Jan Weiss is currently the coordinator for this group, so let her know if you are interested, or call the office, and you will receive a reminder phone call a couple of days in advance.  There is no preparation, just come with your questions!

At other times, the Chavurah Program conducts trips to local museums to tour Jewish related exhibits, conducts Israeli Dance Chavurot and Jewish cooking groups.

The JCCWH Chavurah Program is supported by a grant from the Eda and Walter Millard Family Fund.
